Touch the Stars

To Touch the Stars is a song written and produced by astronaut Scott Tingle’s son. It was written to honor his family’s journey to reach his dreams.   Watch me touch the stars is one of the lines of the chorus. Fitting for the videos he used. Fitting for his father, the astronaut. But oh, so appropriate for anyone who’s reaching for a dream. Touching the stars implies we have to stretch–a long way. Anyone reaching for a dream must stretch themselves. You must do what you never thought you could do. “If you’re always trying to be normal you will never know how amazing you can be.” ~ Maya Angelou That doesn’t mean you must reach the stars on your first stretch. Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still. ~Chinese Proverb “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” ~ Nelson Mandela Sometimes it’s difficult to break the dream down into small steps because you may not know what it takes to get there. “Use missteps as stepping stones to deeper understanding and greater achievement.” ~Susan L. Taylor Too often we think of the missteps, the mistakes, as wrong or bad. “I love myself for […]

The Power of Love

“We must discover the power of love.” That’s what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said and what Rev. Michael Curry said during the royal wedding. It has never been more appropriate. There’s much to fear, people are being killed every day. There are people who hate. People who are mistreated, abused, oppressed, and living in misery. But the power of love is still all around us. I went to the store for a quick errand today and I saw the power of love working in quiet ways all around me. A mother kissed her toddler. A pair, not-the-same-skin-color, held hands and whispered to one another. A father ruffled his young son’s hair. Love is all around us. It’s not usually very noisy, the royal wedding is an exception. An important exception because it held an extraordinary blend of love and tribute and celebration. Most importantly it held a reminder of Dr. King’s words. There are so many people on the internet shouting angry, hateful words out of fear or negative places and feeling. It drowns out the quieter emotions like love. We, who aren’t full of hate, and anger, and fear, need to hold up the more powerful emotion. I […]

Expect To Have Hope Rekindled

Expect to have hope rekindled is a wonderful attitude to have. And Sarah Ban Breathnach is right about the spring rains. They do come, in time. It’s not easy to wait for the dry season or life’s difficulties to pass. Nor is it easy to hang onto hope when a dry season lasts and lasts. There are lots of sayings about hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. That’s not bad advice, but in preparing for the worst we sometimes get too focused on the bad outcomes and forget the hope part. All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.  ~Winston Churchill Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile. A world of optimism and hope. A ‘you can do it’ when things are tough.  ~Richard M. DeVos Hope is the magic carpet that transports us from the present moment into the realm of infinite possibilities. H. Jackson Brown, Jr. Hope is a wondrous thing. It powers the athletes who work to win the race or the game or go to the Olympics. The singer, songwriter, poet, and all […]
